What This Guide Helps You Understand
This guide explains one thing very clearly: dynamic QR codes need a live redirect domain to keep working.
If you want branded QR links, editable destination control, and long-term stability for printed codes, you need to understand how the redirect domain works before you launch.
You will learn:
- Why a domain is required for dynamic QR codes.
- What users see before a custom domain is connected.
- How to add your own domain.
- How to verify the setup.
- What happens if payment stops or the account is suspended.
- How to protect yourself if the business is sold or handed over.
What a Custom Domain Does
A custom domain lets your QR links appear under your own brand instead of the platform domain.
For example:
- Platform link:
qrcodegen.allsortswebdesigners.co.za/r/abc123 - Branded link:
qr.yourbrand.com/r/abc123
The exact domain you use depends on your DNS setup, but the principle stays the same: the QR code points to a redirect URL, and that redirect URL must resolve in the browser.
Why Dynamic QR Codes Need a Domain
Static QR codes store the final destination directly inside the code.
Dynamic QR codes work differently:
- The printed QR code points to a redirect link.
- The redirect link then sends the user to the current destination.
- That redirect link lives on a domain.
This is why people sometimes ask, "Why do I still see the QR Code Pro URL?"
The answer is simple:
- If a custom domain is not connected yet, the platform URL is expected.
- If the domain is connected and verified, the branded domain should be used.
- If the domain expires or the account is no longer active, the redirect may stop resolving.
When to Use a Custom Domain
Use a custom domain if you want:
- A branded, professional-looking QR link.
- Better trust for customers scanning printed materials.
- Control over the redirect layer.
- A cleaner handover path if the business is sold later.
Do not treat the custom domain as decoration. It is part of the working infrastructure behind dynamic QR codes.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you connect a domain, confirm:
- You own the domain or subdomain.
- You can edit DNS records.
- You know the registrar login.
- The account is on a plan that supports custom domains.
- You have a backup payment method so the domain and account do not lapse unexpectedly.
In the current app, custom domains are available on Pro+ and higher.
How to Add Your Domain
Use the Domain Settings page in your dashboard.
Steps:
- Open your dashboard.
- Go to Custom Domain.
- Enter a subdomain you own, such as
qr.yourbrand.comorlinks.yourbrand.co.za. - Save the domain.
- Add the DNS record requested by the setup instructions.
- Wait for verification to complete.
If you are using a subdomain, that is usually the safest choice. Root domains are more likely to conflict with an existing main website.
DNS Setup in Plain Language
Most setups use a CNAME record.
Typical pattern:
- Type: CNAME
- Name/Host: your chosen subdomain
- Target: the QR redirect host provided by the platform
DNS can take time to update.
Important timing note:
- Some changes work within minutes.
- Some changes take longer.
- You should allow up to 24-48 hours for global propagation.
What Users Will See Before Verification
Before your domain is verified, users may still see the platform URL.
That does not always mean something is broken.
The common states are:
- No domain connected yet.
- Domain connected but DNS still propagating.
- Domain connected and verified.
Only the last state should be treated as complete.
How to Verify It Is Working
After saving the domain, check all of the following:
- The dashboard shows the domain as verified.
- The redirect URL uses your branded domain.
- The QR code scans on a phone.
- The scan opens the expected destination.
- The destination works on mobile data, not only Wi-Fi.
If the domain is saved but not verified, keep waiting and recheck DNS.
What Happens If Payment Stops or the Account Ends
This is the part you should understand before launch.
Dynamic QR codes only stay live while the account and redirect domain stay active.
If payment stops, or the account is suspended or terminated:
- The redirect may stop resolving.
- Printed QR codes may stop working.
- Users may see a default page or an unavailable message.
- Existing campaigns may no longer be usable until service is restored.
That is why the Terms need to say this clearly and why you should not rely on a domain that you may let expire.
What Happens If You Sell or Hand Over the Business
If the business is sold, closed, or handed to someone else, the redirect domain must be transferred or migrated first.
Best practice:
- Transfer the redirect domain to the new owner.
- Or keep control of the old domain and 301 redirect it to the new owner’s redirect system.
- Make sure the old printed QR codes still resolve after the handover.
If you do not preserve the redirect domain, old printed QR codes can break.
Troubleshooting
If your branded domain is not working, check these in order:
- Did you enter the domain exactly as requested?
- Does the DNS record point to the correct target?
- Has DNS had enough time to propagate?
- Is the account active and in good standing?
- Is the domain still owned by the same account?
If users still see the platform URL:
- Recheck verification status.
- Recheck DNS.
- Recheck billing and subscription status.
- Recheck whether the custom domain was removed or changed.
Short Version for Business Owners
Use a custom domain when you want your QR codes to feel branded and stay under your control.
Do not let the redirect domain expire.
If the account stops or the domain disappears, printed dynamic QR codes may stop working.
